On Demand HR Update Student Visas

We bring you a quick and important update for businesses who engage workers on Student Visa’s. The Department of Home Affairs and Australian Border Force have announced temporary measures have been introduced as part of the Governments efforts to support industries which have been particularly impacted by Covid-19.

In short, under the temporary arrangements, Student Visa employees may now work for more than 40 hours per fortnight, even during study periods, but only if they fall into certain industry categories.

For employers, this temporary arrangement may provide some additional flexibility to meet with operational requirements, and should you require any advice on how to take advantage of these temporary measures for your business, please contact On Demand HR.

Hi there, Andrew Koleda from On Demand HR with a very important update for all businesses who engage workers on student visas. In order to support the supply of certain services during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Department of Home Affairs and the Australian Border Force are going to take a flexible approach to student visa holders.

And this includes those that are working beyond the usual work limitations, but only in certain sectors. Under these temporary arrangements, employees who hold a student visa can now look to work more than 40 hours a fortnight even during study periods. If they are employed by an aged care approved provider or Commonwealth funded aged care services provider, by a registered National Disability Insurance Scheme provider, they are enrolled in a health care related course and are supporting the health efforts against COVID-19 as they are directed by health officials, in the agricultural sector, and in the tourism and hospitality sector. No changes have been made to the previous arrangements for students that are working in other industries than the ones we’ve highlighted. So for employers, these temporary arrangements may provide some additional flexibility and manpower to meet with your operational requirements.
